Surprise Falls - Litchfield National Park
Litchfield National Park is just 2 hours drive south of Darwin. It features beautiful perennial waterfalls and associated monsoon rainforests. It is the ideal place for some moderate to easy grade bushwalks with always a cool refreshing swim at the end. Due to its proximity to Darwin most people choose to visit for just one day and are disappointed they have to return to Darwin without visiting the "hidden secrets". Within the national park we have our own exclusive safari camp "Minjungari" tucked away in a hidden corner. You'll enjoy a comfortable night in the wilderness with the only disturbance being the sounds of the bush. The camp is equipped with our purpose built "Safari Tents". They are locally designed for our tropical climate. The walls are of canvas and the windows of insect screen. The floors are of wood and are raised above the ground. You'll enjoy the comfort of this spacious cool design. Each tent has 2 camp beds onto which is rolled a traditional Australian bushman's swag with high density mattress, linen, blankets and pillow. In the evening you will enjoy a sumptuous candle lit dinner from the campfire. Vegetarian and other diets are catered for, be sure to let us know on booking.Day 1
We leave Darwin and head south across the Elizabeth and Finniss Rivers to Wangi Falls. From here we travel to our exclusive camp at "Minjungari" which gets its name from the beautiful blue waterlilies on the billabong nearby. After lunch the 4WD vehicles are put to work as we venture further into the remote, less visited areas of this tropical wonderland. The beautiful Sandy Creek Falls is a must and when seasonal conditions permit, Surprise Creek, one of Litchfield's well-hidden secrets. In the evening we return to Minjungari, where you may see the wildlife come down to feed and drink at the nearby billabong.Day 2
For the early risers and keen birdwatchers a morning stroll along the banks of the billabong will prove rewarding. As well as the many bird species that inhabit the area, you may even meet some inquisitive wallabies feeding nearby. After breaking camp we visit some of the historic sites and explore the pioneer background of the area. We then visit Tolmer Falls, home to a colony of rare Orange Horseshoe bats, and the breathtaking Florence Falls before we return to Darwin via the small town of Batchelor, arriving into Darwin in the late afternoon."Minjungari" (local aboriginal word for blue waterlily) is situated on two beautiful billabongs lined by huge paperbark trees and is just north of the Reynolds River. Facilities in the camp include - fully enclosed (insect proof) dining shelter, large permanently erected tents, compost toilets and solar heated shower facilities.
